It’s not everyone who can stay relevant in an industry for more than 25 years! Ntokozo Mbambo maintains that an open mind and a prayerful spirit is what helps her keep the top spots in the Gospel music industry.
She started her professional music career at the tender age of 15 when she joined the internationally acclaimed Joyous Celebration choir. She went on to become a lead singer and then voice coach in the 13 years she served there.
In 2011, she stepped out to pursue a solo career. She signed up with Koko Records and together they produced Filled (2013 – won awards at SAMA, Crown and AGMMA) and Spirit and Life (2015 – won MetroFM, SAMA, AGMMA) CDs and DVDs recorded at a sold out venue in Johannesburg.
In 2018 Ntokozo celebrated 20 years in the music industry by hosting an intimate concert dubbed Moments in Time. The reminiscent evening would birth a surprise album released on her birthday in November of the same year, and selected videos for release on YouTube. The album was nominated at the SAMAs and won an AGMMA in 2019. The following year she prepared and released a Christmas-themed album The First Noél which was a timely body of African and European inspired music for the Christian festive season.
At the Christmas season of 2022, Ntokozo Mbambo announced a new album release and launch events slated for March of 2023. Not only was the much-anticipated album teaser received with a warm welcome, but the further press announcement of world-renowned Pastor Nathaniel Bassey joining her made continental headlines!
Ntokozo has always been a trend-setter in the industry; holding firmly to her contemporary style since the ‘old days’ when it wasn’t popular. She has also broken stereotypes in hosting her performances and recordings at venues such as Mosaiek Teatro, Emperor’s Palace and the Lyric Theatre when Gospel music events were not common at those venues. Her music has won her many accolades both locally and abroad!
Having worked at a local community radio station for 6 months, Ntokozo is quite familiar with the media space. In April 2019, she was the cover story of True Love Magazine, and has appeared on numerous newspapers, TV and radio station both locally and in Ghana, Kenya and the UK. Ntokozo has also featured in Apple Music’s top 10 women in South Africa for online streams of music. The hit song Jehovah is Your Name remains a favourite!
Ntokozo has created a name for herself but also remained family orientated, being blessed with two beautiful daughters. When asked, she says that as much as she enjoys ministering at the various places she is invited, she enjoys training and imparting skill and knowledge to other singers and aspiring musicians!
