KOKO Records was founded in 2007 by Thoko Mthembu and Nqubeko Mbatha. They saw the importance of assisting artists to have creative control when it comes to their music, and the skillful expression of their craft.

About the Founder: Nqubeko Mbatha
Nqubeko Mbatha has over 18 years of experience in the music industry, and even more having grown up playing in his local church. He studied music at Natal Technikon (now Durban University of Technology).
Nqubeko has played keys for many acclaimed South African musicians across various music genres. He also served for 11 years as musical director and then producer of the biggest gospel ensemble in SA (Joyous Celebration). In 2012, left the ensemble and went on to pursue a solo career signed to Universal Music, as well as focus on the record label he started. With vast expertise in live and studio music production, Nqubeko has also produced music for numerous national TV series, as well as music directed on top South African LIVE awards shows: Metro FM awards, SA Sports Awards and SA Teachers’ Awards.
About the Founder: Thoko Mthembu
Thoko Mthembu started her working career as an advertising executive for the country’s biggest newspaper (Independent Newspaper). She later joined her husband in running various businesses. She is a mother of 3 and a Law Graduate. Thoko is no stranger to music as she grew up in a family of singers. She has been part of a number of singing groups and one in particular (Odade) was signed by Koko Records on its inception in 2007. She currently sings and manages the music department at her local church.
